#MarchMajesty - Celebrates: Sylvia Robinson


She was born Sylvia Vanderpool in Harlem in 1936 Nicknamed the Mother of Hip-Hop, Sylvia Robinson was a singer, record producer and record executive credited to be behind the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's "The Message." With her label, Sugar Hill Records, Sylvia became a leading figure in the proliferation of hip hop around the world. Acts on Sugar Hill included Funky Four Plus One, Crash Crew, the Sequence which was one of the first all-female rap groups along with Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, whose instropsective single The Message, in 1982, is often acclaimed as one of the greatest hip-hop records of all time.
