VitalNewz: Street Named After DJ Scott La Rock
On May 19, 2017, a naming ceremony was held in recognition of a street being named after DJ Scott La Rock. The Universal Hip Hop Museum along with Councilman, Fernando Cabrera, worked for over 2 years on the legislation that would put the DJ's name on a Boulevard in Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. Scott's mother, Carolyn Morant and his son, Scott La Rock Jr. were both on hand to witness this exceptional honor. Kool DJ Red Alert, DJ Jazzy Jay, and Grand Wizzard Theodore were among his fellow DJ's that were also in attendance.
DJ Scott La Rock was the DJ, Producer and Co-Founding Member of Boogie Down Productions (BDP). KRS One was also a Co-Founder and the groups EmCee. The group garnered critically acclaimed success with their debut album titled 'Criminal Minded' but much would change soon after.
On August 27, 1987, after coming to the aid of his friend and fellow BDP member D-Nice, Scott was fatally shot as he was leaving. It has been 30 years since the untimely passing that left the world of Hip Hop in mourning. D-Nice was at the street naming ceremony. Shortly after he had this to say via Instagram:
"Congrats to @scottlarockjr, the Sterling family, and our Boogie Down Productions family on having a street in the Bronx named after Scott. Thank you for sharing Scott with the world."
