Wallace was born in St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, as the only child of Voletta Wallace, a Jamaican preschool teacher, and Selwyn George Latore, a Jamaican welder and politician. His highly anticipated debut album Ready To Die reached Quadruple Platinum status (4 million copies sold) and peaked at #15 on Billboard's Hot 200 Albums Chart. His posthumous album Life After Death peaked at #1 on that same chart as well as the R&B Albums Chart. It also reached Diamond status (over 10 million copies sold).
